A Review on Silage Additives and Enzymes

چکیده

In order to understand how silage additives can help, one must first understand the ensiling process. Silage fermentation can be divided into 4 phases. The first phase is characterized by the presence of oxygen after forage is chopped and packed in the silo. Plant respiration continues for several hours (and perhaps days if silage is poorly packed) and plant enzymes (e.g., proteases) are active until oxygen is used up. During this phase, excess oxygen can lead to unwanted protein breakdown and excessive heating and growth of yeasts and molds that are undesirable. Oxygen can be eliminated by quick packing, even distribution of forage in the storage structure, chopping to a correct length and ensiling at recommended dry matters (DM) for specific storage structures. Oxygen must be eliminated before optimal fermentation can take place.

Silage Fermentation & Additives

The primary goal of making silage is to maximize the preservation of original nutrients in the forage crop for feeding at a later date. Unfortunately, fermentation in the silo is a very uncontrolled process usually leading to less than optimal preservation of nutrients. In order to assist in the fermentation process, various silage additives have been used to improve the nutrient and energy rec...

The effects of a microbial inoculant and formic acid as silage additives on chemical composition, ruminal degradability and nutrient digestibility of corn silage in sheep

The effects of a microbial inoculant (containing propionic and lactic acid bacteria) and formic acid onchemical composition, ruminal degradability of dry matter (DM) and nutrient digestibility of corn silage wereexamined. Whole-plant corn was ensiled for 60 days in plastic polyethylene bags, and three treatments werecompared, 1: control (no additive), 2: Propionibacterium acidipropionici plus L...

Potential factors that may limit the effectiveness of silage additives

Introduction Various microorganisms, enzymes, nutritive and chemical compounds have been added to forages to maintain or improve the nutritive value of a crop as silage (Kung et al., 2003). As is the nature of most biological systems, there is considerable variation in the outcome of using these additives. This paper will briefly discuss some universal and specific challenges that these additiv...

The Effects of Freezing and Supplementation of Molasses and Inoculants on Chemical and Nutritional Composition of Sunflower Silage

This study was conducted to determine the effects of freezing and supplementation of molasses (M), lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and LAB+enzyme mixture on chemical and nutritional composition of sunflower silage (SF). Sunflower crops were harvested (at about 29.2%±1.2% dry matter) and half of fresh sunflower was ensiled alone and half was frozen (F) at -20°C for 7 days. Silage additives were admix...

Mycotoxins in Silages: Occurrence and Prevention

Mycotoxins are an increasingly discussed topic. Several scientific reports have been written which review the effects of these toxic substances on the health and productivity of animals. However, there is a lack of work regarding the incidence of mycotoxins in ensiled material and the consequences of this occurrence. In this review, practical and field information was converged with scientific ...
